We now have an answer to the question of whether The Vampire Diaries would write in star Candice King's pregnancy or hide it with strategically placed bags, clothing and furniture a la Olivia Pope. At the end of the shocker of an episode "Best Served Cold," we found out something truly life-changing for the college student (yes, as we were reminded last week, she's still in school!).

Caroline Forbes is pregnant! But not with her boyfriend Stefan Salvatore's baby—with the twins of her former teacher (AND FUTURE FIANCE) Alaric Saltzman. Whaaaaa?

Turns out, the TVD writers have come up with a genius way to write in the pregnancy despite the fact that vampires can't get pregnant. After Kai slaughtered his sister, Jo, on the alter after having just said "I do" to Alaric, the twins she was carrying were saved via magical spell and implanted into someone else. And, thanks to Valerie, we know who that someone is: Caroline.

Executive producer Caroline Dries teased after a screening of last week's episode that Caroline would face some character-defining struggles in the near future, and now we know what those struggles will be.

"She is going to find, I think, an inner strength that she didn't know she had," Dries teased. "I like the character most when she's not feeling insecure."

Plus, Caroline's got BFF Bonnie by her side for added support. "It is nice to check in with them. They are the most normal dynamic and relatable people on the show, in my opinion," Dries added. "So they will continue to be friends as Caroline goes through her drama with Stefan and she will have more drama coming her way."

And let's not forget about the other bombshell of the week that the writers dropped in the time jump scene: That the mysterious fiance Caroline was referring to in a previous flash-forward is none other than Alaric Saltzman, and the mysterious person who's after our heroes in the future is holding her hostage at her news station.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
