Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is going dark for season two. And by dark, we mean literally working from the shadows to protect everyone from danger...even if they don't know it.

That's right, Coulson (Clark Gregg), Skye (Chloe Bennet), May (Ming-Na Wen) and FitzSimmons (Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge) are going to be doing a thankless job when the Marvel/ABC series returns later this month, since the general public still thinks S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra are one and the same. And based on the new promo released for season two, that means our favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are going bring a new meaning to the words "black-ops," completing missions off the books and in secret for the greater good.

But the best part of the promo is the awesome reveal that Skye is about to take a much more active role in the field, kicking some major butt and sporting a chic new hairdo along the way. Watch the new promo now!

Um, can we take a second to talk about Ward's (Brett Dalton) hot new prison beard? Captivity is clearly doing some good things for this Hydra baddie. Is he going to start feeling some remorse for duping his fellow agents and love interest, and maybe start snitching on his Hydra contacts?

Please say yes, because we need Ward and Skye to get back together, and that won't happen as long as Ward's loyalties lay with the bad guys.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two is also adding some new faces, like Adrianne Palicki who will play iconic Marvel character Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird and Kyle MacLachlan who will play Skye's mysterious father. Plus, geek goddess Lucy Lawless joins as S.H.I.E.L.D. veteran Isabelle Hartley, Reed Diamond as Hydra villain Daniel Whitehall/Kraken, Nick Blood as a mercenary that Coulson reaches out to for help, Henry Simmons as agent Alphonso "Mac" Mackenzie and Simon Kassianides who will play Bakshi.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
